Saturday, 1 pm to 8 pm

Somali Independence Day is in association with a larger mission known as Ka Joog, which is an organization created in 2007 by a group of Somali young adults. Their mission is to “create a better world by providing community-based, culturally specific programs and services to Somali youth and their families.”

While Ka Joog serves to enrich the lives of their people, Somali Week strives to enlighten and engage the public on Somali culture. There will be events from XASUUSO (REMEMBER) 1960, which teaches Somali culture, history, and the meaning of Somali Independence Day through different mediums to an interactive street festival.

The Independence day includes music, food, and games, at the annual family friendly street festival. This year, the highlighted attractions of the festival includes lottery giveaways and prizes, free health screenings, petting zoo, live entertainment, local somali craft artists, henna, and the like.

Somali week sponsors include companies such as Coca Cola, Health Partners, the YMCA, Mall of America, and Metro Transit to name a few. With Metro Transit being a sponsor, attendees will have the opportunity to receive frees rides to the Somali Independence day festival.
