This exhibition focuses on the Russian traditional clothing, showing costumes worn in different regions of Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries. The costumes have been painstakingly reproduced by the members of the Russian Cultural Center from museum pieces or period photographs or paintings.

The project is intended as a retrospective of the efforts to research, preserve and share rich cultural and artistic traditions of the Russian peasants. The costumes were recreated for unique programs, devoted to specific areas of the vast Russian empire. Each program offered demonstrations of the costumes, songs, and dances of seven or eight regions of each area, thus introducing the diversity and aesthetic value of traditional Russian folk arts and crafts.

Participating artists

  • Elena Kallevig – folk dolls
  • Loudmila Lobenko – costumes
  • Elena Shurkina – costumes, display design
  • Tatyana Zhukovskaya – headdresses

The Hennepin Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 6 pm, at the Hennepin County Government Center, A Level, 300 South Sixth Street. The exhibit is sponsored by Hennepin County Communications.

Russian Cultural Center

During the 10 years of its existence, the members of the Russian Cultural Center have presented Russian culture and art to more than one million people in Minnesota and have won numerous arts awards, including many at the Minnesota State Fair. It has been a sponsor of the Russian group at the Festival of Nations, and a contributor to community events in Bloomington, Blaine, Duluth, St. Cloud, St. Peter, Orono, and all over Twin Cities.

As the member of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association, the center opens its doors at Art-A-Whirl, presenting the works of its members and Russian artists. The recipient of grants from the Minnesota Regional Arts Council and The Minnesota State Arts Board, the RCC was able to create a number of unique programs and build a collection of folk costumes and artifacts. In addition, embroidery and beadwork by Tatyana Zhukovskaya earned her 11 awards at the State Fair.
